CoxVPN on the big screen

The TV app is a grid of oversized tiles, so the remote's arrow keys get you everywhere. Changing country takes a handful of presses. This one isn't released either. At launch it lands on the Get the apps tab, shown only while your pass is running.

Supported versions · Android TV or Google TV hardware (a TV, a box or a stick) on Android 8.0 or later.

Install and switch on

  1. 1Settle the VPN pass in your cart from your balance.
  2. 2Open My info > Get the apps and locate the Android TV item.
  3. 3Two ways to move the APK across: fetch it in a browser on the TV itself, or carry it on a flash drive and tap it in a file browser.
  4. 4Say yes to the unknown source prompt and finish the install.
  5. 5Start the app and type your email and password, or your account token, on the on-screen keyboard.
  6. 6Arrow down to a city and press the center button to connect.

The TV layout

On launch, the city you used last takes the middle of the screen beside a large connect tile. Scroll down for cities sorted by region. A remote with a mic lets you just say the country.

The TV build keeps split tunneling. You might route a single overseas video app through the tunnel while every other app on the TV uses your home line directly.

Settings that suit a TV

Stick to WireGuard on a TV. It is gentler on the processor than OpenVPN, which on an entry-level streaming stick can mean the difference between clean playback and stutter.

Enable connect on startup. After a power outage or a reboot, the TV rejoins the VPN without anyone touching it.

Shows pause to buffer

A nearer city usually helps, near either you or the service you're watching. And if the TV is on Wi-Fi, plugging in a network cable often does more than any app setting.

Can't find the switch for apps from outside the store? Many models hide it in Device Preferences > Security & restrictions. Otherwise the TV's manual will say where it is.

Device questions

Will the TV use up a slot?

While it's on the VPN, yes. That's one out of 6 on Basic, 10 on Plus or 12 on Pro.

Do streaming apps play through the VPN?

The TV connects no differently from a phone. Whether a given streaming service accepts VPN addresses is that service's choice, so we can't vouch for any specific one.

Any option for a TV that isn't Android?

Use your router. With our WireGuard file loaded there, every TV on that Wi-Fi gets the VPN with no app at all.
