Where the VPN makes a difference
For each scene we note the server to pick, the features to turn on and the pass that fits.
- Shows and moviesThere is no gigabyte meter on any pass, so a season binge at home or one film in a hotel room costs nothing extra.Read more
- Playing gamesOther players run into our server's address instead of your home's, and game traffic on shared dorm or cafe Wi-Fi is encrypted.Read more
- On the roadHotel and airport Wi-Fi gets encrypted, and a server back home keeps your bank and other local services within reach.Read more
- Free hotspotsAt a cafe, library or train station, what you send goes into the tunnel before it ever touches the open Wi-Fi.Read more
- Working on the goEmail, shared files and video calls stay encrypted on any network, and Pro gives you an IP your admin can allowlist.Read more
- Comparing prices by countryOpen a flight or hotel page as a visitor from another country and see the price it shows there.Read more
Who actually needs a VPN?
Where does a VPN make a real difference?
Free Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and cafes puts you on one network with people you do not know, and the person running it can look at the traffic passing through. When CoxVPN is on, everything between your device and our server is encrypted. Neither the hotspot nor your ISP back home can see past the fact that a VPN connection exists.
It is useful abroad too, when a service from home only opens for a local IP, or any time you would rather put a server's address in front of your real IP.
What will a VPN not do for me?
Changing your IP does not hide who you are from a site you are logged in to. It also will not clean malware that is already on your device. Keep your system updated and be careful with attachments you do not trust, VPN or not.
Some countries restrict VPNs by law. If you are traveling to one, read up on the rules before you go. Something that is illegal stays illegal with a VPN on.
Common questions
Is there any point running it on home internet?
It comes down to your own comfort level. Your home provider can keep a record of where you connect. Once you connect, all it can make out is a stream of encrypted data going to our server. Not worried about that? Then switch it on for cafes, airports and travel, and skip it at home.
Should banking always go through the VPN?
Banking pages are already protected by HTTPS. Where the VPN helps is shared Wi-Fi: the hotspot owner stops seeing which bank or site you open. If your bank app blocks the VPN, put just that app on the split tunneling list.
Can I watch streaming services from other countries?
Sometimes, with no guarantee. Streaming services block and unblock VPN addresses over time, so what works this month may fail next month. Connect to the country you want, and if playback fails, try another city there.
Can I leave it running from morning till night?
Yes. There are no data or speed limits, so leaving CoxVPN on from morning to night is fine. If a single app has trouble with the VPN, stay connected and exclude that app with split tunneling.
