Small icon versus full window
The icon's color tells you the connection state at a glance, and its menu lists your latest few servers. For the complete city list, the protocol picker, the kill switch or split tunneling, open the main window.
Ad, tracker and malicious site filtering on Plus and Pro is done by our resolvers, not inside the browser. No browser extension is involved, so it applies equally to Safari, Chrome, Firefox and every other Mac app.
Good settings for a MacBook
A MacBook that travels from home to office to coffee shop changes networks several times a day, and every change leaves a brief gap. The kill switch closes that gap. WireGuard tends to be back before you've typed your password after lifting the lid.
Local tricks like streaming to a speaker over AirPlay or swapping files with the family iMac prefer your plain home network, as do office tools tied to the company address. Give them a place in split tunneling.
The switch won't flip
Nine times in ten, somebody closed the permission dialog without approving it. Open System Settings > VPN, remove the CoxVPN item, then log in to the app again. macOS will ask once more.
Old antivirus software and abandoned VPN apps can leave network extensions running. When pages fail with the tunnel up and work with it down, open System Settings, review the extension list for networking, and disable the leftovers.
