Should I list the apps to skip, or the apps to protect?
Exclude mode keeps the whole device on CoxVPN, and your list holds the apps that skip it. This is the safer starting point, since any app you forget is still covered.
Include mode flips it. Only the apps on your list use the tunnel, and the rest go out normally. It fits when you need the VPN for one job, like a browser you keep just for work research.
Pick the mode that leaves you with fewer apps to list. A short list is easy to keep accurate, a long one is not.
Which apps do people usually take out?
Banking and payment apps that expect an IP from your own country. Navigation apps that think you are in the server's city. Screen mirroring to a TV on the same Wi-Fi, which often fails while the phone is in the tunnel.
Heavy downloads are a frequent pick as well. Let a 70 GB game update or a nightly cloud backup use your normal line, and keep the browser on CoxVPN.
What do excluded apps give up?
Sites reached from an excluded app see where you really connect from, and we add no encryption to that app's data. Only exclude apps where that is fine.
The kill switch does not cover them either. When the tunnel drops, excluded apps keep running on the plain connection.
How do I set it up?
You can use it on any pass. It ships with our apps once they are finished, and the wording of the menus can vary slightly from one device to another.
A new rule takes effect the next time you connect. Apps that were already open need a restart before they follow the new route.
- Open Settings in the app and choose Split tunneling
- Choose exclude mode or include mode
- Tick the apps from the list, then connect again
